About FOCUS Magazine

With a circulation of 550.737 in Q2, 2012 the FOCUS magazine is the second biggest weekly news magazine in Germany. It is published by the major German publishing house Hubert Burda Verlag in Munich.

Spark has researched, negotiated and cleared various covermounts (give-away CDs or DVDs attached to the front of the magazine) for news magazine Focus over the years, for example:

FOCUS magazine asked Spark to develop various ideas for a covermount to mark the most recent US presidential election. FOCUS decided to go for an almost 90 minute documentary, looking behind the scenes at the White House with its 132 rooms and 487 members of staff.

Focus-covermounts1It’s about the secrets, the scandals and the big moments. It shows unique impressions of one of the toughest and most powerful jobs in the world. Interviews and private footage of former presidents, security staff, historians and even chefs give a fascinating insight, bringing to light intimate details.

Spark’s responsibilities included finding and clearing the content, setting up the contract and full project coordination between the cooperating parties.

The finished DVD appeared on the cover of FOCUS magazine on September 24th, 2012.

Kathrin Heinemann, Account Director Hamburg, said: “We are proud to continue our successful line of projects for FOCUS by setting up a cooperation between FOCUS and the History Channel/Polyband. Through this collaboration we have been able to secure this previously unreleased documentary as a covermount DVD and to offer informative and entertaining content which matched the expectations of the sophisticated target group of FOCUS.”

OLYMPIC GAMES 2012: FOCUS decided to go for a 90 minute DVD of ‘golden moments’ from past Olympic Games. These incredible highlights include the most memorable achievements of a range of athletes, but also some of their heartbreaking moments as they realise or fail to realise their dreams of an Olympic medal.

The project was realised with the approval of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The finished DVD appeared on the FOCUS magazine published on July 4th, 2012.

Kathrin Heinemann, Account Director Hamburg, said: “This project was a clearance challenge on many different levels but the end result is a captivating and emotional DVD which definitely lives up to the expectation of FOCUS and their readership demographic. It was a great success in terms of sales for FOCUS.”

FOCUS magazine asked Spark to develop another idea for target-group specific covermounts that would potentially also attract new readers.

Work-life balance is one of the key issues that people struggle with these days. Spark’s idea was to create a ‘Time-Management’ tool, providing FOCUS readers with a means of self-analysis, as well as hands-on practical time management advice. Spark negotiated a co-operation with the well-established brand “simplify your life” run by the Verlag Deutsche Wirtschaft AG.

Kathrin Hauer-Heinemann, Account Director Hamburg, said: “This project led us into a whole new content section. I think the success of the finished product proves that Spark’s knowledge and experience in finding the right partners to communicate to a defined target group, developing and coordinating cooperations, is in no way limited to our core field, the entertainment industry.”
