Spark clears rights for toom’s 40th anniversary campaign

toom Baumarkt GmbH engages in the retail of products for the home improvement in Germany. The company owns and operates home improvement and do it yourself (DIY) stores which offer products for construction, renovation, gardening, leisure, home repair, and improvement. The company was founded in 1978 and is based in Cologne, Germany. toom Baumarkt GmbH operates as a subsidiary of REWE-ZENTRALFINANZ e. G.

Spark was asked to clear a number of different rights for toom Baumarkt’s 40th anniversary campaign on behalf of Scholz & Friends Berlin and toom.

The concept of the ad was to show domestic DIY scenes from the last 40 years. In order to give the viewer an idea of the period of time historical original footage and audio were used including the first launch of the Space Shuttle Columbia in 1982, Boris Becker’s Wimbledon in 1985, the German wall coming down in 1989, Barack Obama winning the US election in 2004 and Germany winning the Football World Cup in 2014.

Each piece of footage or audio included several different rights that had to be researched, negotiated and agreed in a contract, and included personality rights in additional to the footage and audio rights.
